Wonton Terror

Vivien Chien

Lana Lee is managing the family restaurant business, and they signed up for a stand at the Cleveland Asian Night Market festival in the summer. The weekly festival is usually busy with customers, and it brings in good business. Lana was very excited on the opening night of the Night Market until, unexpectedly, the truck next to her, Wonton on Wheels, suddenly blew up, and the owner of the truck was found dead in the fire. The owners of the Wonton on Wheels are old friends of Lana's parents. The husband is a rather mean and fierce person who doesn't have many friends and was stern to his wife and hard to please. After initial investigation by the police, the case is looking more like murder than an accident. The murder intrigue triggered the "detective" instinct in Lana, and she was determined to play the role of an amateur "investigator" to find out for herself who the real killer is. Lana identified a few potential suspects and set out to learn more about the relationship of each suspect with the victim and the family. In the meantime, her own family experienced a flare-up of new drama as well.

This book is full of turns and twists. It is entertaining to read. The main character, Lana, is a unique and optimistic individual. She is intelligent, warm, and down to earth. She developed various theories about the potential murderer and went out to try to find evidence to prove or disprove her theories. The book talks about conflicts and misunderstandings among members in the victim's family, as well as other families, including her own. Her own mother and her aunt live very different lifestyles and are always arguing. But in the end, they accepted the choices that each other had made and learned to still love each other despite their differences. I enjoyed the suspense and turn of events in the story. I also liked the rediscovery of love and acceptance among siblings, parents, children, and friends.
