With Twice the Love, Dessie Mei

Justina Chen

With Twice the Love, Dessie Mei, by Justine Chen, is a great book about a girl going into 6th grade whose name is Dessie Mei. She was adopted from an orphanage in China. But what does she see when she starts her day at school, someone who looks just like her named Donna when they find out that they are identical twins. They were both adopted by families in the same area. But one family is White American and the other is Taiwanese American. The story is about new found sisterhood, cultural differences and how to bond with each other. When Donna's grandma got attacked, Dessie felt she must help her twin.

This is a heartfelt story and I really enjoy reading it. I learned about children of adoption families, the feelings of new found twin sibling who looks exactly like you but growing up in very different families. I like the bonding experience between Dessie and Donna how they discovered their similarities and differences. One has to learn how to be a supportive sister in times of crisis. I also have a sibling and I can associate my feelings with Dessie as she find out about herself and her love for her twin sister. I also learned that you have to forgive people. It is a sincere and warm story.
