The Shadow Hero

Gene Luen Yang and Sonny Liew

Hank lives in Chinatown with his parents. The story begins with Hank introducing the tale of the four spirits born in China, revealing that his father had the support of the turtle spirit. It then discusses the marriage of his mother and father. Then it cuts to the present with Hank working in the supermarket that his father owns. One day, Hank's mother is driving home and is caught in the middle of a crime. After a hero saves her, she wants Hank to become one. Eventually, his father is killed and the turtle spirit leaves his father’s body and goes into Hank’s body. Using the turtle spirit, he decides to get revenge on his father's killer.

The book was an interesting read, I liked the art and the story, however, I didn’t like Hank's mother. She was too desperate to make Hank a hero. And then, when Hank decided to be one, she suddenly changed her mind. I can relate to Hank because I also have parents who try to force their expectations on me, but when I meet them, they suddenly change their minds. I liked the art of the book too; it was very creative and cute. I also liked the book in general because it's about heroes. Overall, the book had a pretty good storyline and a good main character.
