The Many Masks of Andy Zhou

This book is about a boy who is struggling in school and at home. His grandparents come and stay for a while and so he has to give up his room and sleep on the living room sofa. His only comfort is his best friend Cindy. Cindy and Andy decide to audition for the school play, but Andy freezes up in the middle of the audition. After his mess up, Cindy starts to stop being his friend. Also, in his science class he has to sit next to a bully named Jameel, but after a while, Andy and Jameel start to become friends. When Cindy hears about this, she does not approve, and she tries to talk Andy out of being friends with him, but Andy doesn't listen and stays friends with Jameel.

I learned that even if you are best friends with someone, they might not turn out to be as much of a good friend as you thought they were. This is shown when Cindy tries to talk Andy out of being friends with Jameel and when Jameel bullies him again after becoming friends with Andy.
