Revolution is Not a Dinner Party

Ying Chang Compestine

Revolution is Not a Dinner Party by Ying Chang Compestine tells the story of Ling, a young girl growing up during the 1970s during Mao Zedong's Cultural Revolution. Her father is a respected doctor, but their comfortable life falls apart when the communist government begins targeting intellectuals. A cruel officer moves into their home, and her father is arrested. Ling must learn how to survive in a dangerous world where speaking one's mind can lead to punishment. The novel demonstrates how Ling's bravery, love, and hope enable her to prevail despite her fear, loss, and injustice.

This book made me feel outraged and sad. I was angry at how Ling and her parents were treated for being educated. Additionally, I gained insight into what life was like during the Cultural Revolution. I admired Ling's bravery during all the challenges she faced. This book made me appreciate my home, freedom, and family. it has taught me to be grateful.
