Millicent Min, Girl Genius

Lisa Yee

Millicent Min is eleven years old, but she is not a normal girl; she is a genius and already in high school. She’s extremely intelligent, but she is lonely because she struggles to make friends due to her high IQ. During the summer, her mom signs her up for volleyball and makes her tutor a boy named Stanford who is doing poorly in academics but a great basketball player. At volleyball practice, Millicent meets Emily, who is nice and actually wants to be her friend, but Millie is afraid that Emily won't like her if she tells her about how smart she is. So Millie lied and hid the truth from Emily. Millie pretended to be a regular kid. Later, Emily found out that Millie was a genius and was very mad that Millie had hidden the truth from her, so she stopped being Millie's friend. Eventually, Millie gathered the courage to apologize to Emily, and they renewed their friendship. The story also explored love and conflict within both families. Millie really bonds with her grandma, and Emily misses her dad, who is divorced from her mom.

I am the same age as Millicent, but I am not a genius like her. I am a normal girl, but at times I also feel that I am different from others, and it is not always easy to find friends who can totally accept who you are. I am not as into sports as Millie, but Millie was able to improve her volleyball skills by working hard and learning tips from others. She learns to appreciate the things that her best friend, Emily, likes to do, even though she initially thought Emily was not a very deep person like herself. I enjoyed reading the book because it relates to me in many ways, and I realized that it is most important just to be yourself and be honest with friends and family.
