Lily and the Great Quake

Veeda Bybee

The story is based on the real terrible earth quake that shook San Francisco in 1906 that impacted the main character, Lily's family in Chinatown. The earthquake and the fire that broke out after the quake devastated the city where many homes were destroyed or burned down. People all over San Francisco lost their lives and homes. Lily has just celebrated her twelfth birthday when the earthquake took place. She had to help her younger brother, Lee, and another neighbor finding their way through the burning city to reach the Ferry Building where they will meet with their parents who had to travel separately due to her Mother's injured leg. The book described the journey through the city and the dangers they encountered. It described some of the prejudice and discrimination towards Chinese around that time.

This is an inspiring book to me how Lily took up her responsibility as a big sister who lead her younger brother through the burning city of San Francisco, because I also have a little brother. I liked how Lily compared her journey through the city with the " The Wizard of Oz" which she got as a present on her twelfth birthday just before the earthquake. I learned about the history about the San Francisco's big earthquake in 1906 and how the terrible fire that broke out destroyed large parts of San Francisco. I learned about how people suffered injuries and lost of homes and lives. I also learned about the lives of Chinese people living in Chinatown and the the discrimination that they had to face.
