It’s Boba Time for Pearl Li!

Nicole Chen

Pearl Li is a Taiwanese American girl who loves crafting and creating crochet dolls, known as amigurumi. Her parents don’t think her hobby is useful, and they would rather she focus on school and tech. The only person who truly supports her art is Auntie Cha, the owner of Boba Time and Pearl’s favorite boba tea shop. Soon, Pearl finds out that Boba Time is about to shut down because its fridge is broken and no longer working. What Pearl decides to do is to raise money by selling her amigurumi. Although this was a hobby, it became difficult for her to turn it into a business. She tries her best even though people may doubt her because she loves the boba shop and doesn't want it to close. This story is all about hard work and determination to reach her goals, and she doesn’t let others interfere with that.

Reading It’s Boba Time for Pearl Li! made me feel really inspired and proud. Pearl reminded me that even when others don’t believe in your passion, you should keep going. This connected to me personally as in school i may struggle but when i persist i can do things that i didn't think were possible. Additionally, when pursuing engineering in college, it may seem impossible at times, but I should remember to chase my passion, just as Pearl did. I felt sad when her mom didn’t support her crafting because I know how hard it is when family doesn’t understand your dreams. Even with this, she remains determined, and that really inspires me. She didn't give up even when things got hard and others doubted her. This book reminded me that with passion and effort, you can achieve anything.
