How We Say I Love You
Nicole Chen
Some cultures, like the Chinese, are shy to say " I Love You". But the story in this book gave many examples of how the Chinese express their love for one another in their daily lives. For Hana's family, they greet one another "Zao An," which means good morning, and her mother shows her love through the steaming pot of xi-fan ( porridge) that she makes for breakfast. Grandpa shows his love when he walks Hana to school, holding hands and stepping together in rhythm. Hana shows her love by doing well in school to make her parents proud. We show our love in all the things we do for one another, even though we don't say the words " I Love You" as often as other people do.
I like the story in the book. It is like my family. We show our love through the things we do for one another. My dad plays with me when he returns from work, like making things with Lego or playing basketball or soccer. My mother shows her love by hugging me, playing piano, and reading bedtime stories with me. My sister shows her love by playing games with me. I also try to do well in school so they can be proud of me like Hana in the book. One of my grandmas, Nai Nai, loves to cook delicious food for us. The other grandma, Po Po, shows her love by playing games and reading books with us. I am so lucky that my family loves me and I love them too.
