Where Reasons End
Yiyun Li
The book is about an imagined conversation between a mother in grief with her son who has committed suicide at age 16. The conversation carried on as the mother goes through her daily lives as if the son is with her every moment. They talked about everything, from old memories of time spent together to what the future will bring, from dreams they had to the food they prepared together. They son loved to bake. Through the dialogue, the mother remembers many incidents that took place when the son was a young boy. We can feel the sadness in the mother as she wishes the dialogue with her son can continue forever.
The author's writing style is poetic and heart-wrenching. As a reader, I can feel the tender love the mother has for her son. Sometimes the parents don't understand their children and may blame themselves when tragedies happen, especially when they loose a child at age 16 due to suicide. The book is about "word", "thinking", and meaning of life, love, and death. After reading the book, I felt a touch of sadness of loss but also the beauty of love between a mother and her son.
