Rich People Problems

Kevin Kwan

This book is the finale of the Crazy Rich Asians series, centering on the drama surrounding Su Yi’s impending death and the fate of her iconic Tyersall Park estate. As her children and grandchildren gather to pay their respects—and vie for the inheritance—Nicholas Young, long estranged from Su Yi due to her disapproval of his wife, Rachel, returns to Singapore. Reuniting with his grandmother before her passing, Nick uncovers secrets about her past, including her bravery during WWII and her efforts to shelter underground fighters. With this newfound understanding, Nick ultimately raises funds to preserve Tyersall Park, tying together the family’s history and legacy. The book also explores family intrigues, romances, and scandals involving characters like Jack and Kitty Bing, Charles Wu, and Astrid Leong, all interwoven into a captivating story.

I found this book witty, hilarious, and insightful. It satirizes the extravagance of wealthy Asian families while exploring cultural clashes, such as Rachel’s discomfort with her Singaporean in-laws’ prying questions about her private life. The historical backdrop adds depth, shedding light on Singapore’s WWII struggles. Balancing humor, drama, and heartfelt moments, this book offers a delightful and thought-provoking conclusion to the series, and it’s a perfect candidate for another Hollywood adaptation.
