Legend

Marie Lu

Legend takes place in the future at a time of war between the Republic, which was once the western united states, and its neighbors. June Iparis is a fifteen year old trainee for the Republic's highest military circles, when her brother is murdered by Day Wing. Day is also fifteen years old, and he fights to survive. Living in the plague ridden slums with his mother and little brother, and being the most wanted criminal in the Republic, hides the fact that his intentions are always well meant. June hunts down Day, and discovers that he's been framed. Together they uncover the truth behind the murder, and consequently unveil the corruption within the government system. It becomes their responsibility to tear it down before it kills Day's little brother.

This book takes place during wartime, so the urgency and paranoia translate perfectly into the reader. But having this perspective makes the tender and loving moments all the more beautiful. The bonds that June and Day make with others throughout the book are very real and relatable. The character evolution is both heartwarming and heartbreaking, due to the circumstances. I learned the importance of using my physical and mental talents, as well as reaching out to friends when I need help. The biggest learning point in this book is forgiveness and understanding. The only way June and Day can get close is to forgive each other for their faults.
