I Hope This Doesn't Find You starts with a kid named Sadie, who is always competing against fellow top scorer, Julius. They have been fighting for the top grade for 9 whole years, with Sadie usually falling behind. So, secretly, she began writing numerous emails insulting him, the oldest of which dated back to elementary school, without intending to send them. However, she accidentally sends every single email. This poses a significant problem, as almost everyone now knows who she really is.

At the start of the book, Sadie just seemed like an overachiever who did anything to make Julius mad or just disappointed. But later in the book, after she sends the emails, she stops caring. The development between the two characters lit the spark for later chapters.
